Classroom Education

Early Childhood – Kindergarten

In our early childhood classes, children are gradually introduced into a school climate where learning is accomplished through play and meaningful experiences.

Within the positive atmosphere of our Little Cardinals, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten classrooms, children are encouraged to increase their problem solving, reasoning, and creative abilities through fun, hands-on learning activities.

Program goals encompass:

  • Christian development
  • A positive self-image through discovery
  • Self-expression
  • Interaction with others
  • Increases in social, emotional, and behavioral skills.

The cognitive development of the child is nurtured with math, language arts, and reading readiness skills. A thematic approach offers opportunities for the children to explore the world in which they live through science and social studies.

The Little Cardinals program (3 years old) will offer the following classes:

  • Full Days – 5 Half Days
  • 3 Full Days – 3 Half Days (M-W-F)
  • 2 Full Days – 2 Half Days (T-TH)

The class size is limited to 18

The Pre-Kindergarten program (4 years old) will offer the following classes:

  • 5 Full Days
  • 3 Full Days (M-W-F)
  • 2 Full Days (T-TH)

The class size is limited to 20.

Saint Philip School follows the Rhode Island state mandate with regard to age requirements for admission to school. Children must be five years of age on or before September 1st to be eligible for admission to Kindergarten. There are no exceptions to this policy. The September 1st age cutoff applies for both the Little Cardinals (3 years old) and Pre-Kindergarten (4 years old) classes as well.

Lower – Middle Schools

Students in the Lower and Middle Schools are educated in the same manner and are challenged to grow intellectually and spiritually by being active participants in our rigorous academic program and service opportunities.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in numerous extracurricular activities such as:

  • Athletics
  • Chorus
  • Drama
  • National Junior Honor Society
  • Student Council
  • Yearbook
  • SPS Rewind News

Children of all ages engage in many exciting activities to help them develop awareness of themselves, their connection with others as members of a larger community, and of their special relationship with God. By fostering a loving and nurturing environment, we assist parents in developing in their children a Christian way of life based on Christ’s invitation to always do the loving thing.
